One realization became immediately clear to me after Saturday’s class. It is it much easier to receive feedback, than it is to give it. I found it easy to receive feedback for several reasons. I trusted the person giving the feedback. We have worked together and I respect her opinion, and therefore I actually appreciated the feedback she gave. Giving feedback was much more difficult. It is hard to judge someone else’s writing, especially if they are writing about a personal situation. Another theme that resonated with me was the concept of “scholarly writing.” That term came up a lot and I think in my mind, scholarly = boring. Saturday was the first time where I reconciled in my mind that scholarly writing still needs to be engaging for the reader.
